# Study setup

> Choose recruiting method, use sensible interview defaults, and select the appropriate study type before entering Customize Plan.

## Recruiting method

| Value | Use when | Recruitment tool |
| - | - | - |
| `panel` | User Intuition should recruit respondents | `launch_panel` |
| `byop` | The user has their own participant list | `create_participants` |
| `synthetic_respondents` | The user requests AI respondents | Chat interviews; no participant recruitment |

Ask the user when the choice is not explicit. Do not infer it from the research topic.

## Interview format

For Panel and BYOP, `create_study` defaults to `voice` when the user does not specify a format. Synthetic respondents use chat. Set `interview_format` to `chat` or `video` only when the user requests it and the recruiting method supports it. Read `userintuition://catalog/modes` for discovery when needed.

Concept links are incompatible with chat interviews. Send the concept request through `customize_study` and relay its question so the user can choose voice or video.

## Language and voice

Omitted settings default to English (`en`) and `male` voice configuration. Read `userintuition://catalog/languages` when the user requests another language; the catalog includes lowercase language codes and `auto` for automatic detection. The public voice choice is `male` or `female` only, including for chat studies. `userintuition://catalog/voices` provides display names without implementation details.

## Study type and plan

Public writes accept `study_type: "in-depth-interview"`, `"concept-test"`, or `"prototype-test"`. The default is `in-depth-interview`. A prototype test cannot use chat; it uses the default voice format or an explicitly requested video format. `userintuition://catalog/study-types` and `userintuition://catalog/study-types/{slug}` can explain the available planning templates, but the MCP host must not build the plan from internal prompt fields.

Create the metadata draft, then send the user's brief to `customize_study`. The backend applies the study type's current `chat_prompt` instructions and persists the resulting plan, duration, audience, screeners, and concept material.

## Concept material

Describe links and images in the `customize_study` conversation. For an image attachment that the client exposes as bytes or a readable local path, the agent can send the base64-encoded bytes through `customize_study.concept_image`; no public URL is required. A public downloadable URL and label can still be supplied in the message.
